A Vintage-Inspired Valentine’s Day

After moving as many times as we have moved, my Valentine’s Day decorations were looking a little worse for the wear. So this year I shopped my house and made a few things to put together a new Valentine’s Day scheme. I started with this cute table runner I’ve had for a long time. It was a Christmas table runner, but the green stripe is an apple green, so it works perfectly for Valentine’s Day! The red is cheerful and the white is crisp; it makes a very sweet start to the table. I pulled out my vintage milk glass vases and filled them with one of my favorite flowers — alstroemeria. Alstroemeria is easy to find at Trader Joe’s and other grocery stores. I usually buy bunches with blooms that aren’t open yet. They are pretty as buds, but then when they open… glorious! And they last a long time — usually 10 days or so! Add some candles and the mailboxes I made this year, and the table is done.

Over the mantle I put some stems of seeded eucalyptus in my vintage Italian vinegar bottles — again simple, and they will last for a long time. And then I made this simple paper garland and bunting — inspired by buntings from WWI in England.

Notes of Love

I put out some lacy doilies on the table next to the mailboxes. All week we have been writing love notes and notes of appreciation to each other. It is really fun to see the flags go up and down on our mailboxes.

This may become a permanent fixture in our family. We’ll see!
