Where to Buy Native Plants

From Specialized Growers to Online Sources

Choosing where to buy your plants is as important as choosing the plants themselves. Specialized native plant nurseries are far superior to big box stores, which often stock similar inventory regardless of the local climate. Additionally, big box stores often label plants as “native” when they simply are not. Why? Who even knows!

Specialized growers focus on locally-adapted species and ecotypes that are better suited to your specific soil and rainfall conditions, ensuring higher survival rates and greater ecological value for local wildlife.

Beginner-Friendly Native Plant Sources (Where to Start)

If you’re new to native plants, the sheer number of species—and regional differences—can feel overwhelming. The easiest way to start is with nurseries that curate pre-planned gardens and targeted selections, offer simple plant kits, and provide clear guidance. These sources are especially beginner-friendly because they remove guesswork and focus on plants that are reliable, adaptable, and widely available.

When searching for growers near you, include “native plant nursery,” “native plant sale,” or “native plant growers” plus your location.

My other trusted sources of native plants include:

  • High Country Gardens: A trusted source for water-wise and native perennials; most of HCG’s plants come in smaller pots that establish quickly. Offer pre-planned gardens, too!

Disclosure: HCG is a periodic sponsor of Wild Revival Gardening, but I genuinely don’t work with companies I don’t love.

  • Garden for Wildlife: Offers curated native plant sets designed to support specific pollinators like monarchs and hummingbirds.

  • Prairie Moon: Provides a variety of native species and open-pollinated flowers that help attract beneficial insects. Their selection is particularly good for the Midwest.

  • Local Native Plant Societies and Botanical Gardens: Many organizations host annual spring sales featuring species specifically vetted for your immediate area.
